Fiji’s Maritime Infrastructure in Urgent Need of Repair: What’s Next?

The Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) is in the process of finding a contractor to repair jetties, with the aim of completing these repairs by the end of the year. This announcement was made by the Minister for Public Works, Transport and Meteorological Services, Ro Filipe Tuisawau, at the recent World Maritime Day 2024 event held at Albert Park in Suva.

During his address, the minister highlighted the significant decline in maritime infrastructure, noting that he has observed deteriorating conditions not only at jetties but also at certain ports across Fiji. He emphasized the necessity of ensuring passenger safety and comfort, as well as the provision of basic amenities at these facilities.

“The safety of passengers and the convenience of travel are concerns I have raised,” Ro Filipe stated. He underscored the government’s obligation to uphold safety standards and stressed the need for enhanced collaboration with international partners to tackle these challenges.

“The FRA, which has the budget allocated for the jetties, is actively working on securing a contractor to expedite the repairs,” he said. “I am insisting that this work should be completed within this year to avoid ongoing issues, as it is fundamentally the government’s responsibility.”

He acknowledged the challenges ahead and called for action not only in government programs and budgets but also in partnerships with international development organizations. “We have brought this matter to their attention, seeking their assistance,” he added.
