Fiji Water Flying Fijians hooker Sam Matavesi has publicly addressed the ongoing issues within the Fiji Rugby Union through social media. He voiced his concerns regarding delayed player payments and a perceived lack of support from the FRU board.
Matavesi stated that players are not demanding excessive pay but are simply seeking timely compensation in line with their contracts. He emphasized that players have met their obligations without requesting more funds at the time of contract signing, anticipating that payments would be made as promised.
He acknowledged the efforts of senior players who have worked hard to negotiate reasonable salary increases in 2019 and again in 2023. “We’ve never asked for ludicrous money, just to be paid in accordance with what was agreed upon,” he remarked.
The hooker indicated that the absence of backing from the FRU board has resulted in ongoing financial instability for players during team camps, creating uncertainty about receiving their due payments.
Matavesi advocated for a change in leadership within the organization, suggesting a board that is genuinely dedicated to supporting both players and management in achieving success. He praised senior players like Waisea Nayacalevu, Semi Radradra, and Levani Botia for their commitment to advocating for their rights and driving necessary changes within the rugby system.
He warned that without these efforts, the potential of Fijian rugby could be stunted, adversely affecting the growth and development of future player generations.
