The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) is dedicated to training school dropouts in Kadavu to become skilled seafarers. CEO Joeli Cawaki revealed that this initiative aims to equip young individuals with valuable maritime skills and open up career opportunities for them.
MSAF has collaborated with non-governmental organizations and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to provide training to local communities in Kadavu. So far, two training sessions have been organized, with plans for a total of nine to cover all districts in the region. One session attracted nearly 200 participants, focusing on boat owners but primarily targeting the youth.
Cawaki emphasized the importance of this program for young people, many of whom have left school. By becoming trained seafarers, they can secure stable jobs in a maritime-focused nation like Fiji. He stated, “At the moment, we are short of seafarers,” and urged youth to consider seafaring as a worthwhile career.
In partnership with the Pacific Centre for Maritime Studies, MSAF is committed to developing qualified seafarers who possess the appropriate education and skills, ultimately granting them certificates of competency.
This initiative is a significant step forward in providing youth with opportunities for employment and personal growth, aiming to bridge the skills gap in the maritime industry while fostering a sense of community and hope for a brighter future.
