The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) has issued a strong warning regarding the risk of overcrowding on vessels, as highlighted by its CEO, Joeli Cawaki. With the Christmas season approaching, many individuals are expected to travel to remote islands and marine areas to spend time with their families, raising concerns about safety.
Cawaki emphasized that vessel owners who persist in overloading their crafts with passengers and cargo will face repercussions. “We frequently observe overloading during this festive season,” he noted. He clarified that each vessel is issued a service certificate detailing the permitted number of passengers, and that any vessel exceeding this limit will be halted by MSAF officials at the docks.
In light of the anticipated increase in travel, MSAF plans to enhance its monitoring efforts at the jetties. Cawaki stated, “Given the bustling activity and crowded conditions at the jetties, we will intensify our oversight.” This includes potential headcounts and cross-referencing cargo and passenger lists in conjunction with the ship owners.
This proactive approach aims to ensure the safety of travelers during the busy holiday season, fostering an environment where family celebrations can occur without compromising safety. It is a reassuring reminder that the authorities are prioritizing public safety and are prepared to act decisively to prevent any tragic incidents.
Overall, the message conveys a commitment to maintaining maritime safety, allowing families to enjoy their holiday celebrations with peace of mind.
