The Maritime Authority of Fiji (MSAF) is set to enhance its surveillance and inspections at bustling ports and jetties during the festive season, emphasizing the importance of safety on the water. This initiative will involve collaboration with various agencies to perform routine checks to ensure compliance with essential safety regulations concerning vessel operations.

These regulations include verifying the certification of boat captains, inspecting vessel conditions, and ensuring that the number of passengers aligns with safety standards. Joweli Cawaki, MSAF’s chief executive officer, has stated that any unsafe or non-compliant practices will be dealt with swiftly.

“Staying committed to maintaining the safety of Fiji’s maritime environment is our priority, particularly during this busy and potentially risky season,” Commander Cawaki emphasized. He noted that through improved monitoring and partnerships, the goal is to guarantee a safe and enjoyable holiday experience for everyone.

As the festive season coincides with cyclone season, MSAF urges boat operators, passengers, and the public to be extra diligent in prioritizing safety and adhering to maritime rules when making plans for trips to outer islands. Commander Cawaki encouraged travelers to always check weather forecasts and be prepared to adjust their plans as needed.

The agency also underscored the necessity of effective trip planning, as unforeseen weather changes may disrupt travel. “While we hope for favorable weather, it’s essential to make safety the top priority,” he said. MSAF urges Fijians to remain vigilant while enjoying the holiday season and to contribute to maritime safety by reporting any unsafe practices they may observe.

In summary, this initiative reflects MSAF’s steadfast commitment to ensuring the safety of maritime activities during a time that is traditionally marked by increased travel. By collectively focusing on safety, the community can help create a safer environment for all, making for a happier holiday season.

This is an encouraging development as it highlights the authorities’ proactive measures in safeguarding lives on Fiji’s waterways during the festive season. Such attention to maritime safety can foster a culture of responsibility among travelers and operators alike.
