The Secondary School’s Maritime 7s tournament is currently underway at Buckhurst Park in Suva, fostering an exciting atmosphere as four interior schools compete in this one-day rugby event. The participating schools include Beqa Yanuca Secondary School, Nakorotubu Secondary School, Koro Island High School, and Vunisea Secondary School.

The tournament features both girls’ and boys’ teams in the U16 and U18 categories, enriching the day with varied rugby action. Tournament Director Navitalai Waiwalu expressed that this holiday program offers a rare opportunity for schools that typically do not have easy access to rugby competitions, allowing them to experience the thrill of the sport.

Waiwalu also acknowledged the dedication of the families who traveled from distant areas to support their children. The atmosphere at Buckhurst Park is described as vibrant, with loud cheers and a strong sense of unity among players and supporters, compensating for the smaller number of teams participating.

This event exemplifies the community spirit often seen in Fijian rugby, promoting not only the sport itself but also the values of teamwork and perseverance. The Maritime 7s tournament, concluding this afternoon, serves as a promising platform for nurturing young athletes and fostering a love for rugby in youth.

The involvement of these schools not only enhances their rugby experience but also contributes to the development of a stronger rugby culture in Fiji, paving the way for future talents who may aspire to represent national teams.
