The Fiji Bitter Marist Sevens tournament proudly celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of grassroots rugby development in Fiji. Since its launch in 1976, the tournament has transformed from its modest beginnings into one of the most prestigious rugby sevens events in the nation, a feat achieved through the enduring support from Fiji Bitter.

Lawrence Tikaram, President of the Marist Rugby Club, highlighted the tournament’s remarkable growth: “From just a handful of teams in the early days to 120 teams competing over three days, the growth has been phenomenal,” he noted. He further underscored the tournament’s reputation as the most challenging sevens competition in Fiji, attributing much of its success to the long-standing partnership with Fiji Bitter.

Etrina Simpson, Head of Marketing – Alcohol at Coca-Cola Europacific Enterprises, spoke about the importance of this collaboration, stating, “For 50 years, Fiji Bitter has stood alongside grassroots rugby, nurturing talent and community spirit.” She emphasized that the Marist Sevens transcends being merely a tournament; it represents unity and pride within Fiji’s rugby community.

As part of the celebrations, a special Legends Match has been organized, featuring rugby icons Waisele Serevi and Jerry Tuwai. Their respective teams will compete right before the men’s cup final, with each of the 15 players from both sides receiving recognition in the form of five cartons of Fiji Bitter and a shared prize of $5,000. This honor acknowledges their significant contributions to the tournament’s storied history.

This landmark event not only commemorates five decades of rugby excellence but also aims to inspire a new generation of aspiring Fijian rugby players, ensuring that the spirit of the game continues to thrive in the future. The marriage of tradition and community spirit celebrated at this year’s Marist Sevens resonates deeply, promising a bright future for rugby in Fiji.
