Fiji’s Marist 7s Turns 50 with a New Logo and Global Ambitions

The 50th Fiji Bitter Marist 7s tournament was officially launched yesterday at Walu Bay in Suva, marking a significant milestone in the history of rugby in the region. This landmark event celebrates five decades of showcasing talent, with many players who graced its fields going on to achieve international acclaim.

Among the celebrated alumni are notable athletes like Jiuta Wainiqolo, Pio Tuwai, and William Ryder, each having made a mark on the global rugby stage after participating in this prestigious competition. Lawrence Tikaram, president of the Marist Rugby Club and tournament coordinator, emphasized the importance of this anniversary, stating, “We are very proud of our history, but also very proud of the fact that we have been able to contribute to grassroots rugby for the last 50 years. It’s been a milestone achievement not just for us, but for all the clubs and players who have participated during the 49 years of Marist 7s.”

In a nod to its rich heritage, Tikaram also unveiled a new tournament logo under the theme “Golden Roots, Global Wings,” symbolizing the deep roots of the tournament in the local community while highlighting the aspirations of players reaching global levels. The much-anticipated tournament is scheduled to take place in March of next year, promising to be a memorable celebration of rugby and the talent it fosters.

This milestone not only honors the history of the Marist 7s but also serves as a testament to the enduring spirit of rugby in Fiji, inspiring future generations of athletes.
