Fiji’s Mahogany Industry Set for Major Legislative Overhaul

The Cabinet has approved a review of the Mahogany Industry Development Act 2010 (MIDA 2010) and the Mahogany Industry (Licensing and Branding) Act 2011 (MILBA 2011). Acting Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica announced that MIDA 2010 established the Mahogany Industry Council, while MILBA 2011 addresses the licensing and branding processes for Fiji Mahogany.

Kamikamica noted that the Mahogany Industry Taskforce Review Committee, formed in March 2024, recommended this legislative review to resolve issues faced by stakeholders in the mahogany sector. The review is expected to assess the role of the Mahogany Industry Council and facilitate further growth in the industry, enhancing the recognition of Fiji’s high-quality hardwood products both domestically and in international markets.
