The Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Fiji is urging all road users to exercise caution due to ongoing severe weather conditions that have brought heavy rainfall and flash flooding to numerous regions. LTA Chief Executive Officer Irimaia Rokosawa emphasized that these unfavorable conditions significantly heighten the risk of road incidents, prompting the Authority to advise both drivers and pedestrians to remain particularly vigilant when traveling.

Rokosawa highlighted the dangers posed by the combination of heavy rain, poor visibility, and flooded roadways. He stressed the importance of prioritizing safety at all times. “With adverse weather impacting many areas, we ask that all road users remain alert. Those who must travel should stay informed about weather warnings and road closures,” he said. He also advised avoiding unnecessary trips, especially in areas prone to flooding.

Despite the hazardous conditions, it has been concerning that some drivers continue to speed and drive recklessly through floodwaters, which poses a danger not only to themselves but also to others on the road. The LTA has asserted that it will enforce penalties on those who violate traffic laws and compromise public safety.

In response to the severe weather, Mr. Rokosawa offered crucial advice for motorists: adhere to speed limits, adjust driving to match weather conditions, maintain safe distances from other vehicles, use headlights in low visibility, and plan trips while accounting for possible delays due to weather or traffic issues. He reiterated the importance of abiding by road closures and signage, particularly in flooded areas where floodwaters can be deceptively dangerous.

The LTA is collaborating closely with the Fiji Police Force, Fiji Roads Authority, and municipal councils to monitor road conditions and enforce safety measures effectively. Mr. Rokosawa assured that the Authority is committed to public safety during this challenging time and is strengthening its emergency response capabilities.

As the community navigates through these tumultuous conditions, he encouraged everyone to stay informed through reliable weather sources and local news for the latest updates on road conditions. “The safety of you and your loved ones depends on your actions. Let’s all contribute to minimizing risks during this period,” he stated.

Road users are advised to keep updated on the latest road closures, weather alerts, and safety protocols, as several LTA branches across the country have temporarily closed due to flooding.

In summary, the LTA’s campaign emphasizes the shared responsibility of road users to prioritize safety during this severe weather, supporting a collective effort to navigate the challenges posed by nature. With proper vigilance and adherence to safety measures, there’s hope that the community can safely ride out the adverse weather conditions together.
