The Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Fiji is ramping up its efforts to enhance road safety by taking strong measures against reckless drivers. As of December 9, 2024, the LTA has revoked 62 driver’s licenses and suspended 21 others for driving violations.
LTA Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa reported that the Authority has conducted 107 counseling sessions at various branches aimed at promoting responsible driving. During these sessions, officials issued 1,366 first warnings, 297 second warnings, and 155 final warnings to offenders. These initiatives are part of a comprehensive strategy to educate drivers on their duties and to discourage unsafe practices on the road.
Additionally, the LTA has placed 39 client IDs on hold due to serious infractions, with one case referred for further audit. Rokosawa emphasized the organization’s zero-tolerance stance towards misconduct, saying, “We are committed to ensuring that our roads are safe for everyone.”
He underscored that the LTA’s actions extend beyond punitive measures and are part of a broader mission to save lives and reduce accidents. By holding drivers accountable and removing dangerous individuals from the roads, the LTA believes it can significantly decrease the number of preventable traffic incidents.
Rokosawa concluded by stating, “Every license suspended or canceled reduces the risk on our roads. We need all drivers to recognize the critical responsibility they hold, not only for their safety but for everyone who shares the road.”
This proactive approach by the LTA reflects a determined effort to create safer roads for all Fijians, promoting a culture of accountability and responsibility among drivers. With continued education and enforcement, there is hope that Fijian roads will become safer spaces for the community.
