Susana Qionibaravi, the sole female athlete representing Powerlifting Fiji at the upcoming Oceania Regional Championship, is passionately inviting more women, especially mothers, to explore the sport she has embraced in her journey over the past nine months. At 36 years old, this mother of two is poised to make her international debut, showcasing a remarkable trajectory since she began powerlifting earlier this year.
“I’d really like to call on more girls and women, especially mothers, to try out this sport,” Susana expressed, noting her excitement and sense of achievement after such a short period of time in the sport. “I’m 36 years old, I’ve just come into the sport, and this is how far I’ve come in nine months.”
Residing in Nasau, Lomaiviti, Qionibaravi has transformed her life through powerlifting, discovering a new passion that has reinvigorated her spirit. She hopes that her participation will encourage other women to break barriers and embrace strength sports. “I want to see more women doing more strength sports like this, and if this is for you, come out and reach out to the sport, and we will be happy to help you,” she shared.
As Fiji prepares to host the 2026 Oceania Regional Championship, Susana’s ambition is to inspire a new generation of female athletes who will don their national colors. “If anything, I’m encouraging more women to come into the sport because I’d really love to see other women participating not just locally but internationally too,” she declared. Her desire extends beyond personal goals, as she envisions the 2026 championships fostering a thriving environment for women’s participation in powerlifting across the nation.
Qionibaravi will compete in the +84kg Women’s Open Category, underlining the progress of female athletes in Fiji’s powerlifting scene, a domain traditionally dominated by men. Her journey reflects the broader narrative of empowerment and inclusivity, where the increasing visibility of female athletes paves the way for future generations.
The positive momentum seen in Fiji’s powerlifting community, bolstered by events like the National Powerlifting Championship which showcased impressive female participation, signifies an evolving culture. As Susana leads by example, her dedication not only shines a light on her personal achievements but also heralds a hopeful future for women’s strength sports in Fiji, encouraging new participants to step into a world of empowerment that powerlifting can provide.
