Fiji’s Lomaiviti Princess II Runs Aground: What Went Wrong?

The Maritime Authority of Fiji (MSAF) is currently investigating the grounding of the passenger vessel Lomaiviti Princess II, which occurred yesterday in the Maloi Passage off the west coast of Ovalau. The vessel was en route from Natovi Jetty to Levuka and was carrying over 40 passengers, crew members, and five vehicles when the incident took place.

MSAF’s chief executive officer, Joweli Cawaki, reported being informed of the situation shortly after the vessel ran aground at approximately 9:20 AM. He noted that another vessel, the Saint Mary, was nearby and provided assistance in towing the Lomaiviti Princess II and safely transporting the passengers to Levuka.

Captain Aca James Small, manager of Goundar Shipping Services, stated that the vessel was following its routine route when it struck the reef. He indicated that an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the incident, suggesting potential crew negligence due to their familiarity with the route. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries among the passengers.

Captain Small also mentioned that the salvage operation would have to wait for high tide. In light of this incident, Goundar Shipping Limited has suspended all scheduled trips to Levuka until further notice.
