A twelve-member Fiji Emergency Medical Assistance Team (FEMAT) is set to depart for Vanuatu tomorrow to provide essential relief services. During a farewell event, Permanent Secretary for Health, Dr. Jemesa Tudravu, expressed gratitude to the team for their willingness to support the Pacific island nation in its time of need.

Dr. Tudravu emphasized the significance of the mission, stating, “You are not only representing the Ministry of Health while out there, you are representing Fiji as well.” He acknowledged the personal sacrifices made by the team members, recognizing the challenge of leaving their families to fulfill such important duties.

FEMAT stands out as the first internationally verified Emergency Medical Team by the World Health Organization in the Pacific Islands, trained specifically to respond to emergencies and disasters domestically and throughout the region. The team’s deployment is made possible with backing from the Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, enabling them to operate independently during crises.

Previously, FEMAT offered assistance to those affected by Tropical Cyclones Kevin and Judy in Vanuatu earlier this year, showcasing their ongoing commitment to humanitarian efforts in the Pacific.

This mission highlights the strong bonds of solidarity among nations in the region, as Fiji steps up to aid its neighbor in a moment of need. The collective efforts and expertise of the FEMAT reflect a hopeful commitment to community support and resilience in the face of challenges.
