The Malake Submarine Crossing Upgrade Project was officially inaugurated on February 11, 2025, aiming to enhance water security for the 645 residents of Malake Island, located in Rakiraki. This $1.1 million initiative underscores the Coalition Government’s dedication to providing equitable water access for all Fijians, particularly for those in remote maritime areas.
Hon. Ro Filipe Tuisawau, the Minister for Public Works, Transport, and Meteorological Services, highlighted the significance of the newly installed 3-kilometer pipeline, which is designed to endure challenging underwater conditions, including strong currents and varying pressure. This feature guarantees both the functionality and longevity of the infrastructure.
“This achievement is more than just about infrastructure; it embodies our vision for a sustainable and inclusive Fiji, ensuring that no community is overlooked,” Minister Tuisawau remarked during the commissioning ceremony.
The origins of this project trace back to 2015, when the initial submarine pipeline was put in place to supply essential water to Malake Island, which had previously depended on groundwater and rainwater. Over the years, the original infrastructure deteriorated, threatening the island’s water supply. In response, the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) launched the upgrade under the Coalition Government’s leadership, securing a reliable water source for the community moving forward.
This upgrade aligns with the larger aims of Fiji’s Water Sector Strategy 2050 and the National Development Plan, boosting livelihoods in rural and maritime regions through crucial infrastructure enhancements.
In summary, the Malake Submarine Crossing Upgrade Project represents a significant investment in the future reliability of water services for Malake Island, reflecting a broader commitment to improving national infrastructure and supporting community resilience. This initiative not only enhances local water security but also promotes sustainable development across Fiji’s maritime communities.
