The Fiji Emergency Medical Assistance Team (FEMAT) has launched a crucial mission to Vanuatu following a severe 7.3 magnitude earthquake that struck the island two weeks ago. This deployment comes in response to an urgent plea for help and symbolizes hope and action for those affected.
Fiji’s commitment to supporting its Pacific neighbors in times of crisis is evident through this initiative. A contingent of 12 team members will offer essential medical assistance at Port Vila and Vila Central Hospital over the next two weeks.
Before their departure, the team presented their traditional i tatau to Dr. Jemesa Tudravu, the permanent secretary for the Ministry of Health and Medical Services. Dr. Tudravu expressed deep gratitude for the personal sacrifices made by the team members, acknowledging the challenges they face in leaving their families to fulfill this important duty.
The deployment aligns with a broader initiative, wherein the Fijian government pledged $1 million in aid to assist Vanuatu in its recovery efforts, as announced by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka. Although Mr. Rabuka noted that financial contributions could not erase the devastation, he emphasized its importance in helping Vanuatu rebuild and recover.
The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), already present in Vanuatu since the earthquake, have been tirelessly working under difficult conditions, demonstrating solidarity by sacrificing their holiday time to aid in the recovery efforts.
FEMAT’s presence in Vanuatu marks a continued commitment to regional disaster response as this team, one of the Pacific’s first WHO-verified international Emergency Medical Teams, has previously provided assistance after other disasters, including the Tropical Cyclones Kevin and Judy in March 2023.
As Vanuatu undertakes rehabilitation efforts, including removing debris and restoring basic infrastructure, local authorities and international organizations are working diligently to provide temporary shelters and essential supplies to displaced families. FEMAT’s role will greatly enhance these efforts by delivering medical care and boosting healthcare services in the hardest-hit areas.
The teamwork inherent in this mission is supported by the Australian Government’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, highlighting the invaluable partnerships that exist within the Pacific region in times of need.
Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, Sakiasi Ditoka, stressed the importance of FEMAT’s deployment as a manifestation of Fiji’s commitment to regional unity and compassion for its Pacific neighbors. The team will not only handle immediate medical needs but will also assess long-term healthcare needs to mitigate health risks in affected communities.
As FEMAT embarks on this mission, their efforts exemplify Fiji’s commitment to humanitarian aid and reinforce the collective strength of Pacific nations in facing adversity. While the road to recovery for Vanuatu is long and challenging, continued support from regional allies like Fiji offers a beacon of hope and resilience for the future.
This collaborative spirit demonstrates the profound interconnection among Pacific nations, solidifying a foundation of mutual support that can withstand even the most trying circumstances.
