Fiji’s Lifeline: Emergency Medical Team Heads to Vanuatu

A twelve-member Fiji Emergency Medical Assistance Team (FEMAT) is set to depart for Vanuatu tomorrow to aid in relief efforts following recent emergencies. The team was honored at a farewell event hosted by Permanent Secretary for Health, Dr. Jemesa Tudravu, who expressed gratitude for their willingness to represent Fiji in this critical mission.

Dr. Tudravu emphasized the importance of their role, stating, “You are not only representing the Ministry of Health while out there, you are representing Fiji as well.” He acknowledged the personal sacrifices the team members are making by leaving their families behind to respond to this humanitarian need.

FEMAT is recognized as the Pacific Islands’ first WHO-verified international Emergency Medical Team, trained to effectively respond to emergencies and disasters not only in Fiji but across the Pacific region. The team enjoys strong support from the Australian and New Zealand governments, which enables them to operate as a self-sufficient unit during crises.

Previously, FEMAT provided assistance in Vanuatu earlier this year following the devastation caused by Tropical Cyclones Kevin and Judy. This ongoing commitment to supporting neighboring Pacific nations highlights the strong bonds and collaborative spirit of the region.

This mission serves as a reminder of the unity and resilience among Pacific nations, as they come together in times of need to lend a helping hand to one another.
