Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced the appointment of Siromi Turaga as the Acting Attorney-General following the dismissal of Graham Leung. Turaga, who previously held the Attorney-General position until his removal last year, will serve in this temporary capacity as the government continues to navigate ongoing investigations raised by recent controversies within the justice system.

Rabuka indicated that Turaga’s reappointment was a necessary measure, expressing confidence in his qualifications. He mentioned that any further decisions regarding Turaga’s role would depend on the outcomes of current investigations, stating that “If there is anything that comes up in the report that would incriminate or necessitate further investigation, then I’ll consider that question when it comes up.”

The dismissal of Leung was influenced by findings from a commission of inquiry related to the appointment of Fiji’s Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) Commissioner, a decision Rabuka described as making Leung’s position untenable. Turaga now steps into this role as the government aims for continuity in legal matters until a permanent appointment is confirmed.

This transition occurs during a period of scrutiny in Fiji’s legal landscape, particularly concerning the recent suspension of FICAC Commissioner Barbara Malimali. A renewed focus on accountability and integrity within Fiji’s governing institutions may result from these changes. Rabuka’s careful approach signifies an awareness of the public’s demand for greater transparency in the operations of government.

The developments in this context could potentially pave the way for reforms that strengthen public trust in the justice system, with hopes that these changes will lead to a more robust and accountable governance framework moving forward.
