The Fiji Police Force has stated that they can only pursue legal action against a recently deported Fijian national if a formal complaint is filed indicating that part of his sexual abuse offense took place within Fiji’s jurisdiction. The individual, who previously served time in the Federated States of Micronesia for impregnating his underage daughter, has raised concerns within the community as he now resides freely in Fiji.

The police clarified that without a formal complaint specifying that an offense occurred in Fiji, they are unable to act since the entire crime transpired in Pohnpei. This statement was made following a recent court ruling where Miriama Naivalu Delai, the victim’s mother, received an eight-year suspended sentence with probation for concealing the abuse and obstructing justice. The court found her actions in hiding the abuse particularly egregious.

Concerns regarding the deported individual’s presence have been compounded by rising awareness of sexual offenses in Fiji. In related incidents, the Fiji Police Force has been actively investigating multiple cases of sexual assault, including recent allegations against police officers and crimes involving vulnerable groups.

Overall, the situation highlights the pressing need for greater accountability and the importance of reporting such crimes to law enforcement, as emphasized by various police officials and community organizations. The community is encouraged to stay vigilant, and it is hoped that increased awareness and action will lead to a cultural shift prioritizing safety for vulnerable individuals in Fiji.
