The government of Fiji is making headway in its plans to create a legal cannabis industry, with legislative efforts currently underway. Trade Minister Manoa Kamikamica announced that this legislation represents the final component needed to officially establish the industry in Fiji.

Kamikamica indicated that while the legislation is in development, it may take time to finalize, with expectations pointing to completion sometime next year. He emphasized the importance of consultation throughout the process, stating, “There will be ample opportunity once the legislation is done to consult more broadly.”

Although the specific details regarding the cannabis industry are still being formulated, the Minister noted that any public recommendations will be considered, contributing to a transparent and inclusive legislative process. The goal is to present the completed legislation to the Cabinet for approval between April and June.

In summary, Fiji is taking serious steps toward a regulated cannabis industry, with a focus on public input and careful consideration of the legislative framework. This initiative holds potential benefits for the economy and reflects a progressive approach to cannabis regulation in the region.

With rigorous planning and public engagement, the path toward a legal cannabis sector could foster economic growth and create new opportunities for farmers and entrepreneurs in Fiji. The collaborative effort may pave the way for a sustainable and responsible industry that can benefit the wider community.
