During the inauguration of the Duadua Resort and its solar power facility in Rakiraki, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Co-operatives, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, and Communications Manoa Kamikamica highlighted the critical role of sustainability in today’s world. He asserted that sustainability is no longer optional but essential.

The Duadua Resort, operated by Latchman and Savita Gounden, will harness a new solar power plant to meet its energy needs, with excess energy supplied back to the national grid. This initiative is seen as a pioneering achievement in Fiji’s renewable energy sector, playing a vital role in diminishing the nation’s dependence on fossil fuels and advocating environmental conservation.

Kamikamica detailed that the establishment of Duadua Solar Energy Fiji Ltd was made possible through the initiative, which has successfully installed 182 solar panels capable of generating over 600 volts of electricity, translating to a daily supply of 100 kW of AC power for the resort. The facility is also designed with backup capabilities to ensure an uninterrupted power supply during nighttime hours.

He reaffirmed the government’s dedication to fostering renewable energy projects in Fiji and hinted at forthcoming announcements from Electricity Fiji Limited (EFL) regarding future initiatives. The government aims to work collaboratively with international partners and private investors to further advance solar, wind, and hydro energy projects and explore innovative fuels like hydrogen and ethanol.

These discussions align with Fiji’s participation in global platforms like the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, where officials emphasized the need for improved financing for renewable energy projects, especially those in rural areas. The Fijian government has set its sights on ambitious energy goals, aiming to achieve over 90% of electricity generation from renewable sources by 2030 and target net-zero emissions by 2050.

The commitment shown by Fiji in these initiatives underscores a strong pledge towards sustainability, revealing its proactive stance in combatting climate change. This strategic movement enhances energy security and serves as an inspiring model for other nations, promoting a greener, more sustainable future for all.
