Fiji is making substantial progress in strengthening its cybersecurity framework as it moves toward establishing the National Computer Emergency Response Team (Fiji CERT). This team is set to play a crucial role in responding to cyber incidents, acting as ‘digital first responders’ for significant national threats. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade and Communications Manoa Kamikamica emphasized that the Fiji CERT will enhance the country’s capabilities in tackling cyber challenges, promote collaboration among government entities, private sector partners, and international allies, and facilitate a robust approach to safeguarding digital infrastructure.

While officially opening the Trend Micro World Tour 2025 in Suva, Kamikamica highlighted the importance of creating an enabling environment for both individuals and businesses within the digital economy. The government is actively working on three key national frameworks: the Privacy and Personal Data Protection Policy, the National Cloud Policy, and the National AI Policy. The Privacy and Personal Data Protection Policy aims to provide mechanisms to safeguard the personal data of every Fijian, while the National Cloud Policy is designed to help leverage cloud technologies effectively. Meanwhile, acknowledging the swift emergence of artificial intelligence, the National AI Policy is expected to be delivered within the next two years.

Fiji’s commitment to cybersecurity is also reinforced by its recent accession to the Budapest Convention, which is designed to enhance international cooperation in combating cybercrime. Kamikamica noted that a comprehensive cybersecurity strategy is vital for achieving digital ambitions, ensuring that national security is fortified against evolving threats.

These advancements signal an optimistic future for Fiji, positioning it as a leader in cybersecurity in the Pacific region. By fostering collaboration and instituting a cohesive strategy, Fiji is not just enhancing its own defenses but is also inspiring neighboring nations to engage in collective efforts towards building a safer digital space. The ongoing initiatives reflect a forward-thinking approach that holds promise for a more secure and interconnected digital environment across the Pacific.
