A chief has underscored the essential role of Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, the Turaga na Tui Cakau, in any leadership transition from Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka to a successor. Ratu Naulu Mataitini, a former vice president of the People’s Alliance party, emphasized that Ratu Naiqama’s backing would lend cultural legitimacy necessary for unifying Fiji’s politically divided landscape.

Ratu Naulu called on both the Prime Minister and Ratu Naiqama to view their leadership as a service rather than an entitlement. He noted that the legacy of these leaders could hinge on fostering generational change, which is crucial for the nation’s progress. “In Fiji, legitimacy comes from both democratic processes and ancestral authority,” he stated, highlighting the significance of Ratu Naiqama’s influence over the northern region.

He expressed that Ratu Naiqama’s endorsement of a reformist successor would carry substantial weight, particularly among traditional structures, while also appealing to younger voters who are skeptical of longstanding political elites. According to Ratu Naulu, as the Tui Cakau, Ratu Naiqama can provide the necessary cultural and political credibility to a reformist candidate, which will help to reassure traditionalists and dismiss youth apprehensions towards established political traditions.

Citing Ratu Naiqama’s sustained presence and influence across Vanua Levu, Ratu Naulu described him as a stabilizing figure during any political transition. He urged Prime Minister Rabuka that his greatest contribution to leadership might be a willingness to step aside for the next generation tasked with addressing future challenges.

This call for thoughtful leadership transition reflects a broader sentiment within the People’s Alliance party and among Fijians who aspire for a more united and inspired political future. As the nation approaches the 2026 elections, the emphasis on collaborative leadership rooted in both tradition and modernity provides a hopeful outlook for political rejuvenation in Fiji.
