Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has agreed to Home Affairs Minister Pio Tikoduadua’s request to temporarily step back from overseeing the Immigration and Home Affairs departments. This decision was reached after thorough consideration amid ongoing investigations concerning the operations of these departments.
Mr. Rabuka stated that, utilizing the authority granted under Section 92(3) of the Constitution of Fiji, the Department of Immigration and the Fiji Police Force will now come under his direct responsibility. Despite stepping down from his home affairs role, Mr. Tikoduadua will retain his position as the Minister for Defence, overseeing the Republic of Fiji Military Forces and Veterans’ Affairs, alongside Mr. Mason Smith, who will remain as the permanent secretary for Defence and Veterans Affairs.
These changes will take effect on December 1. Mr. Tikoduadua expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister through a social media post for allowing the investigation process to move forward without any conflicts of interest. He assured the public that he remains committed to serving the Fijian people in his defence role.
This transition follows a recent incident involving an allegedly unauthorized issuance of a Fiji passport to the daughter of a former Grace Road Church member, a situation that has sparked human rights concerns and allegations against the organization. The former member claims she has been denied access to her children, who have since left Fiji with their father.
This decision highlights the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability, ensuring that issues of significant public interest are addressed fairly. The Prime Minister’s proactive measures aim to preserve the integrity of governmental operations during this period of scrutiny.
In many ways, this situation may ultimately serve as a catalyst for strengthening the mechanisms of governance and public trust in Fiji. Transparency in investigations can reinforce confidence in public institutions and foster a climate of accountability, paving the way for more effective governance in the future.
