A retired police officer, Berenado Daveta, has been appointed as the new Permanent Secretary for Policing, while Aliki Salusalu steps in as the Permanent Secretary for Immigration. This important announcement was made by Luke Rokovada, the Chairman of the Public Service Commission.

Mr. Daveta brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having previously served as the Director of Special Branch in the Fiji Police Force and Chief of Staff Divisional Police Commander for the Southern region. His role as the Force Contingent Commander for the UN Mission in Darfur, Sudan, further highlights his extensive background in policing. Currently, he is a Senior Consultant with the United Nations Development Program in Suva.

On the other hand, Mr. Salusalu boasts impressive academic credentials, including a bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering and a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering with honors from the University of Western Sydney, Australia. He has significant experience in government, having served as the Director of ITC Services for the Fiji Government and as a Counsellor with the Fiji Diplomatic Mission in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

Mr. Daveta has assumed his position immediately, while Mr. Salusalu is expected to begin his role in mid-June 2025.

This transition of leadership is occurring amidst broader changes within Fiji’s governance structure, which includes the recent appointment of ministers for both policing and immigration. As Fiji adapts to these administrative shifts, there is optimism that these leadership transitions will enhance governance, security, and public service delivery for the nation’s citizens. By focusing on local talent and expertise, these appointments represent a proactive approach to improving the effectiveness of government operations in Fiji.
