Fiji’s Leadership Faces Scrutiny: Call for Commission of Inquiry

Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu has expressed his support for Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s plan to set up an independent and impartial Commission of Inquiry to investigate allegations made by former deputy commissioner of FICAC, Francis Puleiwai. Seruiratu highlighted the seriousness of Puleiwai’s claims regarding ministerial interference within FICAC, stating that these matters warrant thorough examination.

“I agree with the Prime Minister that this needs to be investigated,” Seruiratu affirmed. He argued for the establishment of the Commission of Inquiry following this week’s parliamentary session to ensure fairness, transparency, and good governance.

He suggested that the Commission could comprise judicial officers, parliament members, and esteemed legal professionals from the private sector, emphasizing that none should be under investigation and all must be impartial with no conflicts of interest related to the issues at hand.

Seruiratu described the allegations as deeply damaging to the principles of good governance and democracy. He expressed hope that Puleiwai would be available to clarify her allegations and that those implicated would be allowed to defend themselves.

“We are at a crossroads for our beloved nation, and as representatives of the people of Fiji, we must endeavor to uncover the truth behind these allegations and work diligently to restore public trust.”
