Fiji’s Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, Professor Biman Prasad, emphasized the teachings of Prophet Muhammad, highlighting his advocacy for peace, inclusivity, tolerance, and ethical conduct. As Fiji’s Muslim community celebrates the birthday of the founder of Islam, Prasad reflected on how these principles serve as the foundation for social, economic, and political progress.
He acknowledged the valuable contributions of various religious groups in Fiji, particularly noting the Muslim community’s role in education and community engagement. “Our Muslim community has always been, and will continue to be, a vital part of our nation’s development,” Prasad stated.
He also stressed that the teachings of Prophet Muhammad are essential for fostering lasting peace, harmony, and inclusivity, which are crucial for equality, dignity, and justice in society.
In his remarks, he recalled a historical moment in 1974 when a negotiation led by the National Federation Party and then-Opposition Leader Hon Siddiq Moidin Koya resulted in the recognition of Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday and Diwali as public holidays, a testament to bipartisanship in the national interest.
Prasad concluded by extending warm wishes to the Muslim community for a blessed celebration of their Prophet’s Birthday in Fiji’s diverse society.
