The recent release of George Speight, the leader of the 2000 coup, and Shane Stevens, former leader of the Counter Revolutionary Warfare Unit, has been met with a range of reactions from the Fijian public. Minister for Home Affairs Pio Tikoduadua sought to reassure citizens about their safety following this significant event, emphasizing that the security of the Fijian people is prioritized and is not contingent on the presence of Speight or Stevens.

Following more than 20 years in prison, their release through a presidential pardon has sparked diverse opinions across the nation. While some support their return to freedom, others are reminded of the lasting impacts of the turmoil from 2000.

Minister Tikoduadua acknowledged the mixed feelings surrounding the release, stating, “There will be politics, you can’t avoid that. People will not be happy, but I can assure everyone that there is nothing to be concerned about.” He emphasized the progress Fijians have made since 2000 and the ongoing efforts toward reconciliation among key institutions.

He also pointed out that the process leading to their release was legally sanctioned, elaborating that under the 2013 Constitution, individuals convicted of crimes have the right to seek mercy. Tikoduadua noted that the Mercy Commission, an independent body, had reviewed the situations of both men and followed the proper procedures.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka echoed the assurances, stating, “You are very safe. You have nothing to worry about from Speight nor Mr. Stevens.”
