Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation Viliame Gavoka has embarked on a significant tourism scoping mission throughout the Lau Group, commencing with his visit to Moala Island. This mission is a pivotal element in the government’s strategy to foster sustainable, community-driven tourism in the region.
The initiative is spearheaded by the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation and comprises a notable delegation that includes representatives from various organizations, such as the United Nations, the iTaukei Trust Fund Board, the International Organization for Migration, the Republic of Fiji Navy, and Conservation International. This diverse group aims to collaborate and enhance the tourism landscape in Lau.
On the inaugural day of the mission, the delegation made a courtesy visit to Naroi Village and conducted a thorough inspection of the Moala Airstrip to evaluate access and connectivity. This assessment is critical for identifying necessary upgrades to support future tourism activities. The team also engaged in consultations in Keteira and Cokova villages, highlighting the significance of the Cokova game-fishing reef, which has garnered international recognition as a high-value tourism asset.
The overarching goal of the Lau Tourism Scoping Mission is to uncover potential tourism development avenues, evaluate essential infrastructure, and ensure that initiatives align with Fiji’s land and marine governance frameworks. This comprehensive approach emphasizes collective participation from all sectors of society.
Following the fruitful visit to Moala Island, the team is scheduled to proceed to Fulaga, Lakeba, Cicia, and Vanuabalavu, before returning to Suva on Sunday. This mission not only aims to boost tourism in the Lau Group but also fosters community engagement and economic development in the region, reflecting a hopeful future for local tourism.
