Fiji’s Largest and Fastest Ferry Set to Revolutionize Island Travel

Fiji’s largest and fastest ferry is set to begin operations next year. The Yasawa Flyer III, a 320-seat vessel, was custom-made to accommodate increasing demand, according to South Sea Cruises Group chief executive officer Brad Rutherford.

At the Asia-Pacific Hotel Industry Conference and Exhibition Fiji Investment in Tourism Summit held at the Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa in Denarau, Rutherford highlighted that the investment behind the ferry amounted to millions of dollars. The 30-meter long fast ferry will service routes to and from the Yasawas, enhancing support for resort partners and local communities.

“Yasawa Flyer III will also be the first fast ferry in Fiji to be equipped with a full active ride control system, capable of reducing roll in moderate-rough seas by up to 40 percent,” said Rutherford. “In addition, it will feature modern navigational and safety equipment, Starlink internet for reliable Wi-Fi, and GPS technology to provide passengers with real-time trip and destination information.”

The vessel’s custom design and construction are being overseen by the Brisbane-based Aus Ships Group, with delivery expected in mid-2025.

“The company is excited to bring to market what has been a lot of design, planning, and effort over the past year,” Rutherford added. He expressed satisfaction in selecting Aus Ships Group for this significant project, which promises substantial benefits for the people of Yasawa.

“The investment is a clear sign of the confidence which SSCG has in Fiji’s future growth and that of the Yasawa Islands. The Yasawa Islands have been a crucial part of the SSCG business for the past 25 years, and the Yasawa Flyer III signals our commitment for at least the next 25 years.”

The new ferry will have a 33 percent larger capacity compared to the Yasawa Flyer II and, like all SSCG vessels, will offer passenger viewing access from the bow.

Rutherford noted that hybrid and battery technology was not yet advanced enough to support long-distance open ocean travel at speeds of 22 knots. Therefore, SSCG has opted for the most fuel-efficient and technologically advanced machinery available to power the Yasawa Flyer III.
