The Fiji Muslim League (FML) has affirmed its right to develop land it owns in Nabua, Suva, emphasized by the Minister for Housing and Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa, during a meeting with over 400 families facing eviction from the Nabua Muslim League settlement. Nalumisa stressed the importance of land ownership and the challenges residents will encounter if they are asked to vacate.
He acknowledged the residents’ long-standing presence in the settlement and noted that the current Coalition Government is committed to dialogue and consultation. The Minister revealed that discussions with the FML have been ongoing to address the eviction process, and an understanding has been reached regarding the relocation of the affected families.
Nalumisa further explained that the background of this situation dates back to 2015, highlighting numerous consultations held with the residents. With the FML moving forward with their development plans, the government is working closely with them to ensure a smooth relocation process and to gather pertinent information, such as residency and income details, which will play a crucial role in establishing effective relocation plans.
The Minister mentioned that the Fiji Muslim League is expected to hold a meeting this Sunday to further discuss the situation.
This situation highlights the importance of balanced development and the need for cooperation between landowners and residents. With ongoing discussions, there is hope for a resolution that respects the rights of the Fiji Muslim League while also considering the needs and concerns of the families currently residing on the land. A collaborative approach could lead to a positive outcome for all parties involved.
