A significant upgrade is currently underway for the Labasa–Savusavu cross-island link road, aimed at addressing an alarming trend in road safety incidents in Fiji. Aviation Minister Viliame Gavoka announced that a design and supervision contract has been awarded, marking the onset of an 11-month design phase prior to inviting construction tenders.
The upgrade will incorporate safer road alignments, scenic viewpoints, rest stops, navigational signage, and enhancements leading to the Waisali Rainforest Reserve. Minister Gavoka emphasized the pressing need for this project due to a disturbing increase in crashes along the northern corridor.
“There are simply too many unnecessary accidents and fatalities on the Labasa–Savusavu roads,” Gavoka stated. “Through this program, we hope to reduce, if not eliminate, these incidents. This issue extends beyond the North and must be addressed throughout Fiji.”
In addition to improving safety, the upgraded route is expected to enhance the visitor experience and bolster the resilience of the transport network in the Northern region. This initiative not only focuses on reducing road incidents but also strives to promote tourism and connectivity in Fiji, reinforcing a positive outlook for the future of travel within the islands.
