Fiji’s Labasa Airport terminal reconstruction project is set for completion by the end of June next year, according to Mesake Nawari, CEO of Fiji Airports. During a presentation on the Fiji Airports 2022 Annual Report to the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence, Nawari highlighted that the project is a significant investment costing approximately $18.6 million.
In addition to the ongoing terminal construction, Nawari mentioned plans to acquire additional land in Labasa. This expansion aims to enhance the airport’s capacity to facilitate more commercial and tourism-related services. Alongside existing infrastructure improvements, plans for a new airport in Savusavu also emphasize Fiji Airports’ commitment to modernizing its facilities.
Notably, Nawari confirmed that Labasa Airport, along with Savusavu, Matei, and Rotuma airports, is now fully powered by solar energy, underscoring a dedication to sustainable energy solutions within the aviation sector.
The Labasa Airport upgrades are part of a broader effort to rejuvenate infrastructure that has faced delays, particularly influenced by funding challenges and the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. With improvements in place, there is a growing optimism regarding enhanced travel experiences, which could potentially stimulate tourism and positively impact the local economy.
This project demonstrates a proactive approach to addressing the needs of both local travelers and international visitors, aiming to bolster Fiji’s aviation infrastructure and overall economic growth in the long term.
