Agriculture Minister Vatimi Rayalu announced that the Fijian government is actively collaborating with exporters, processors, and various industry stakeholders to ensure that local kava production aligns with both national and international market standards.

Rayalu highlighted the shift in perception of kava in the U.S., which has evolved from a traditional beverage to a highly sought-after ingredient in the health and wellness sectors. Its calming properties make it a favored ingredient in stress-relief supplements and herbal teas, contributing to the growing demand as American consumers prioritize wellness.

To ensure Fiji’s kava can compete on the world stage, stringent quality guidelines are being established. Rayalu explained, “By setting these benchmarks, we are not just ensuring compliance, but also establishing Fiji as the gold standard in kava production. Kava is a representation of our resilience, our culture, and our potential.”

The advancement of the Kava Bill, developed in conjunction with the Ministry of Trade, is nearing completion. This legislation, designed to ensure compliance with international regulatory requirements—including U.S. Food and Drug Administration standards—represents a significant step forward for the industry.

In recent times, the Fijian kava industry has experienced robust growth, with exports reaching approximately $26 million in 2023. The U.S. market alone accounted for a substantial portion of this figure, showcasing the lucrative opportunity the global demand presents for local farmers.
