Deputy Prime Minister and Trade Minister Manoa Kamikamica has emphasized the significant potential of Fiji’s kava industry, which is projected to evolve into a billion-dollar sector. In his Ministerial Statement, he highlighted the necessity for Fiji to ensure that kava exports to the United States comply with Food and Drug Administration regulations and import standards. This compliance is essential for generating more jobs and increasing wealth within the country.
Kamikamica expressed that the kava industry is on a path to substantial growth. The recent Business Mission underscored the commitment to advancing the Kava Bill, aimed at safeguarding the industry and implementing quality and food safety standards for Fiji’s kava.
In response to Kamikamica’s statement, Opposition MP Faiyaz Koya noted that a large portion of Fiji’s kava is consumed domestically, with only eight percent designated for export. He pointed out that if market indicators favor increased exports, there is substantial financial opportunity for Fiji in North America. Koya also urged the need to enhance trade relations with Canada, which is experiencing growth in its e-commerce sector.
