The future of Fiji’s kava industry, which is valued in the multimillion-dollar range, faces significant challenges as recent findings indicate a rapidly aging farming population. This trend raises concerns about the sustainability of production and the availability of labor in the country’s kava sector.

During the unveiling of the Kava Dieback Disease Communication Package, Permanent Secretary for Agriculture Andrew Tukana revealed insights from a Ministry of Agriculture survey, noting that the average age of farmers in Fiji has escalated to between 66 and 67 years. This demographic shift poses a serious threat to an industry already struggling with issues such as disease, land pressures, and deteriorating soil health.

Dr. Tukana emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “With an aging population of farmers, labor is really a challenge for us.” He acknowledged that although the kava industry has experienced remarkable growth over the last two decades, its sustainability hinges on the influx of younger individuals into farming roles.

The transition of kava from subsistence farming to a more commercial cash crop model reflects the increasing demand for kava within both local and international markets. According to Dr. Tukana, consistent growth in commercial production highlights the crop’s significance to the economy.

David Hicks, the PHAMA Manager, indicated that the communication materials tied to the initiative will be integral to an immediate plan involving farmer training and field visits. This initiative is designed to equip farmers and stakeholders with vital information and practical guidance.

“The launch of these communication kits represents a crucial progress point in ensuring that our farmers are better informed, prepared, and supported,” Hicks mentioned.

Dr. Tukana reiterated the importance of sustained collaboration among government bodies, industry partners, researchers, and farmers as a cornerstone for maintaining the viability of the kava sector. By addressing these critical labor challenges and fostering a new generation of farmers, Fiji can strengthen its kava industry for future prosperity.
