As the effects of climate change increasingly affect Fiji’s islands, residents of Kavala in Kadavu are expressing their concerns regarding local development initiatives. Community members are advocating for thorough assessments of projects to mitigate any long-term environmental damage, emphasizing that the survival of these islands heavily relies on their natural resources.

Ravoama Walai, the district officer for Nakasaleka, highlighted the urgent need for proactive measures rather than reactive damage control. He underscored the importance of acting now to preserve the environment for future generations. Villagers in the area are calling for development plans to be created only after comprehensive consultations, ensuring all voices are heard and considered.

One local resident succinctly put it, “We want development consultation to be done honestly, where we are enlightened on everything, the pros and cons of the development and that can only be done if relevant stakeholders and the team are working together with communities.” This sentiment captures the community’s desire for transparency and collaboration in development efforts.

According to residents, early planning and stringent environmental evaluations are crucial for achieving sustainable development. Their commitment to balancing ecological preservation with necessary progress reflects a hopeful perspective that prioritizes the well-being of both the community and the environment.
