Fiji’s Justice System Transformed: 30 New Justices of the Peace Sworn In!

Fiji has marked a significant enhancement to its justice system with the swearing-in of 30 new Justices of the Peace (JPs) at a ceremony held at the High Court in Suva. Officiated by Chief Justice Salesi Temo, the event highlights the important functions that JPs serve in facilitating access to justice within communities.

These newly inducted Justices of the Peace, who completed their training on March 19, are prepared to undertake essential duties, such as signing search warrants, witnessing affidavits, and protecting the rights of individuals during police interviews. Chief Justice Temo emphasized the vital role these JPs will play, urging them to maintain integrity, independence, and accessibility in their service.

He reiterated the need for JPs to be available at all times to assist law enforcement and to ensure due process is upheld. The Ministry of Justice acknowledged the JPs’ contributions, reaffirming that their work is critical in maintaining the rule of law and making legal services accessible to all Fijians.

This swearing-in ceremony follows a series of judicial appointments in Fiji aimed at strengthening the legal framework. Recently, Chief Justice Temo himself was sworn in, reflecting a commitment to improving the justice system—an initiative that promises further developments within the judiciary. Such efforts show a hopeful trajectory toward a more robust and equitable legal environment in Fiji, underscoring the increasing focus on community-oriented justice.

Overall, the induction of these 30 JPs signals ongoing progress in Fiji’s justice landscape, contributing positively to public confidence in the legal system and ensuring that justice is within reach for all citizens.
