The Ministry of Justice in Fiji is set to expand its public awareness campaigns, focusing on enhancing access to essential legal services for residents in rural and remote communities. Minister Siromi Turaga emphasized that the initiative aims to ensure that “no Fijian is left behind” in accessing vital resources such as birth registration, business services, and court-related support.

In a recent update, Minister Turaga noted that outreach activities from September to November 2024 successfully served a total of 651 individuals through the Births, Deaths, and Marriages (BDM) Registry and 1,235 people sought assistance from the Registry of Companies. This initiative demonstrates the Ministry’s commitment to delivering crucial services directly to communities, particularly in less accessible areas of Fiji.

Further outreach efforts will target various communities, including Gau, Cakaudrove, Rotuma, Levuka, Tailevu, Rewa, and Ra, from January to March 2025, aiming for inclusivity in service access. These expanded campaigns will include legal education sessions, mobile registration teams, and partnerships with local leaders to tailor services to community-specific needs.

This initiative echoes previous outreach efforts where the Ministry engaged communities in the Yasayasa Moala region and Koro Island, emphasizing the principle that essential services must reach the most isolated populations. Recent programs have resulted in successful business and birth registrations and fostered community trust in the justice system.

As the Ministry of Justice continues to improve access and efficiency, there is optimism that these outreach programs will lead to a stronger connection between the government and citizens, facilitating their rights and reinforcing social cohesion across Fiji. This proactive approach lays the groundwork for a more equitable society, ensuring that all Fijians have the opportunity to access necessary legal services and support.
