Addressing the team during their farewell for the FIFA Women’s U20 World Cup in Colombia, the President noted, “This is an exceptional achievement, as it marks the first time that Fiji has a women’s team competing at such a prestigious level in the FIFA World Championship in Colombia, which is truly commendable.”
Fiji, known for its prowess in rugby, is now gaining international recognition in soccer, with President Katonivere highlighting the nation’s ability to exceed expectations on the global sports stage. He pointed out the country’s remarkable accomplishments in various tournaments, particularly in 7s rugby, and stated that the women’s soccer team’s successes signify an exciting new chapter in Fiji’s sports history.
However, the President acknowledged the obstacles the team has encountered, such as limited funding, infrastructure, and facilities. He praised the coaching and management team for their unwavering dedication to preparing the players both mentally and physically.
“What you have done is truly commendable,” he said in appreciation of their commitment. The President also recognized the sacrifices made by the athletes and their families and highlighted the significant role of team manager Naziah Ali Krishna, who is married to Fiji’s football captain Roy Krishna and is well-respected within Fiji’s soccer community.
Her participation, according to the President, reflects the profound passion and commitment that enhances the team’s spirit. President Katonivere assured the Junior Kulas of continuous support from the State House, the Government, and the nation. “We will keep supporting and praying for the team and management as you guide and mentor these young women representing Fiji,” he stated.
The Junior Kulas are set to compete in Pool B against France, Canada, and Brazil. This tournament represents a pivotal moment for Fiji, emphasizing the advancement and growth of women’s football in the country, aiming to inspire the next generation of athletes and unify the nation in support of its football team on the international stage.
