The President of Fiji, Ratu Wiliame Maivalili Katonivere, has acknowledged the achievements of the Junior Kulas and expressed his gratitude towards the coaches, management, and young athletes. Speaking to the team before their departure for the FIFA Women’s U20 World Cup in Colombia, he described their qualification as a remarkable feat, marking the first time Fiji has fielded a women’s team at such a prestigious event.
Fiji, known for its rugby prowess, is gaining international recognition in soccer as well. President Katonivere pointed out that the nation has continually “punched above its weight” on the global sports stage, particularly in rugby sevens, and noted that the women’s soccer team is now opening a new chapter in Fiji’s sporting history.
However, he also acknowledged the obstacles the team has faced, including limited funding, infrastructure, and facilities. He praised the coaching and management staff for their dedication in preparing the team for the competition.
In expressing his admiration for their hard work, President Katonivere highlighted the sacrifices made by the players and their families. He specifically commended the team’s manager, Naziah Ali Krishna, wife of Fiji football captain Roy Krishna, for her significant contributions to the team’s efforts.
The President reiterated that the government and the nation would continue to support the team. “We will keep supporting and praying for the team and the management as you lead these young ladies representing Fiji,” he said.
The Junior Kulas will compete in Pool B against France, Canada, and Brazil. This tournament represents a significant advancement for women’s football in Fiji and is expected to inspire future athletes while uniting the nation in support of its team on the world stage.
The squad, coached by Angeline Chua, will kick off their campaign against Brazil on August 31 at 6 PM, followed by matches against Canada on September 3 at 8 PM and France on September 6 at 5 PM.
