Digicel Fiji Junior Kulas head coach Marika Rodu has emphasized the need for government support for overseas players following his team’s 0-1 defeat against Samoa in the Oceania Federation Confederation Women’s Under-16 Championship. The match was crucial for Fiji, as they required at least a draw to progress.
Rodu discussed the difference in player levels rather than a lack of skills as the key issue, highlighting that several players based abroad could represent Fiji if they obtained Fijian passports. He noted that some team members are still eligible for another year in the U16 category, suggesting optimism for the future.
He pointed out that Samoa’s success can be partly attributed to their many overseas players and reiterated the importance of government backing for Fiji’s players in similar situations to strengthen the team. Rodu expressed the need for local players to engage with those residing overseas to elevate the team’s performance.
Questions sent to the Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, went unanswered by the time of publication. Despite the disappointment of the loss, Rodu acknowledged the ongoing work required and the potential within the young team. He lamented the failure to advance despite hosting the tournament, but remained hopeful for the girls’ future in football.
Samoa’s Ayres Ava secured the match with a goal in the 51st minute, leading to their third consecutive win and a place in the semi-finals, where they will face the runner-up from Group B next Wednesday.
