Fiji’s Junior Bula Boys have wrapped up their historic debut at the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Qatar, according to Mohammed Yusuf, the chief executive officer of the Fiji Football Association. Despite facing intense competition and suffering three losses in their group matches, including a significant 0-7 defeat to Argentina, Yusuf remains optimistic about the team’s future.
Yusuf emphasized the importance of this tournament for Fiji, stating, “This marked the first time the team participated on the world stage, making it a historic moment for Fiji football.” He noted that competing against established football nations like Argentina, Belgium, and Tunisia—teams with full-time professional academies—was a substantial challenge. The Argentine side, particularly, displayed unmatched skill, with players like Uriel Ojeda and Mateo Martinez demonstrating their goal-scoring abilities in the match against Fiji.
Despite the harsh realities of the scoreboard, Yusuf expressed confidence in the team’s growth and potential, pointing out that the experience gained in this competition is invaluable. “Our boys did well under the circumstances. They are homegrown and amateur players, and this serves as a good learning experience,” he said. Looking forward, he believes that around 60 percent of the squad will return for the next tournament in Qatar, where they will have a year to prepare and improve.
The journey has not only provided the players with critical exposure to high-level international football but also generated significant national pride. Yusuf indicated that upon their return to Fiji, the players would recuperate and head back to their districts, bringing back lessons that will undoubtedly benefit the future of Fijian football.
While the competition concluded in defeat, Yusuf and fans are hopeful that this experience marks just the beginning and lays a strong foundation for the development of football in Fiji. The growth displayed by these young athletes serves to inspire future generations, igniting aspirations for ongoing progress within the sport.
