Fiji has welcomed Penijamini Ravulolo Lomaloma as an Acting Puisne Judge to the High Court. The swearing-in ceremony took place on Tuesday at the State House in Suva, with President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu officiating the event. Notable attendees included Chief Justice Salesi Temo, Chief Registrar Tomasi Bainivalu, and Mr. Lomaloma’s family, while the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice extended their apologies due to Cabinet commitments.
Mr. Lomaloma now joins a court that holds extensive authority, able to hear various civil and criminal cases and interpret constitutional matters, as well as serving as the Court of Disputed Returns for election-related issues. His previous experience includes a stint as a Resident Magistrate since November 2023, presiding over cases in various courts, and he has a strong background in criminal law and civil matters.
Prior to his judicial role, Mr. Lomaloma served as a Resident Magistrate in Nauru and has a distinguished military background, having graduated as an Infantry Officer from the UK’s Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, where he was awarded the Cane of Honour for being the Best Overseas Cadet. His academic achievements include a Bachelor of Laws from Bond University and a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice from The Australian National University.
Mr. Lomaloma’s appointment highlights a continuing effort to bolster Fiji’s judiciary, reflecting a broader commitment to enhance the legal framework in the country. With new leaders like him, Fiji’s justice system is poised for growth and innovation, fostering public confidence in legal processes and administration.
