Fiji’s Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka reaffirmed the country’s dedication to unity and healing during the closing remarks of the 146th Girmit Commemoration held in Labasa. This significant event honored the Girmityas, the indentured Indian laborers who played a pivotal role in shaping the nation’s history.

Speaking to a large audience at Subrail Park, Rabuka highlighted the legacy of the Girmityas as an essential foundation of Fiji’s cultural tapestry, which transcends ethnic divides and symbolizes resilience and transformation. He stressed the importance of collective progress, pointing to initiatives like the Fiji Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the establishment of national holidays celebrating the Girmityas and the esteemed leader Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna.

Drawing on historical events, Rabuka underscored the moments of understanding and collaboration between the Indo-Fijian and iTaukei communities, emphasizing that the country’s future hinges on nurturing these bonds. Additionally, he acknowledged India’s long-standing partnership with Fiji, mentioning the new 100-bed Super Specialty Cardiology Hospital and recognizing the presence of 27 direct descendants of Girmityas at the event.

The overarching theme of this year’s commemoration, “Preserving the Past, Envisioning the Future,” reflects not only a celebration of history but a commitment to building an inclusive society. The event, with extensive government support and participation, aims to inspire a shared identity among Fiji’s diverse population, reinforcing cultural pride and encouraging harmony amongst all communities.

Similar sentiments were echoed in past celebrations, where community ties and collective remembrance of struggles faced by the Girmityas have been central themes. This commitment to cultural preservation fosters hope for continued unity and collaboration in Fiji, as all citizens work towards a harmonious future together. Through these commemorations and shared narratives, Fiji can celebrate its rich multicultural heritage while simultaneously cultivating a spirit of togetherness, making strides toward a more prosperous nation for all.
