A delegation from Fiji recently explored the remarkable cultural heritage of China, visiting the Temple of Heaven and the Great Wall during their participation in a two-week seminar focused on Digital Culture Construction for Belt and Road Countries. Hosted by the Chinese government, this seminar gathered 35 experts from the IT and cultural sectors of various nations involved in the Belt and Road Initiative.

Among the Fijian representatives were Albert Wong, an Information Technology specialist from the Suva City Council, and journalist Josefa Sigavolavola from The Fiji Times. This opportunity allowed them to deepen their understanding of digital integration tools that could be applied to develop Fiji’s cultural and technological landscape.

During their visit to the Temple of Heaven, a UNESCO World Heritage site with over 600 years of history, they learned about its significance in ancient Chinese culture, where emperors once prayed for favorable harvests. Daily, the site attracts around 100,000 visitors, underscoring its enduring popularity and importance.

At the Great Wall, which is recognized as one of the Seven Wonders of the World, the delegation explored historical sites and watchtowers, enriching their knowledge of Chinese heritage while fostering cultural exchange. This complements Fiji’s growing engagement with international initiatives aimed at bolstering development through technological advancements.

The Belt and Road Initiative, established in 2013, seeks to enhance collaboration among 144 developing nations worldwide. The seminar not only reflects the strengthening ties between China and Pacific nations like Fiji but also showcases a commitment to enhancing digital infrastructure and cultural exchange, promoting a hopeful future for mutual development.

Given the significance of this seminar and the exploratory visits, there is an optimism surrounding Fiji’s potential to integrate new knowledge and technology into its developmental strategy, contributing to a digitally transformed society. These exchanges of knowledge stand to play a vital role in advancing Fiji towards a prosperous and interconnected future.
