Jone Kubu, a Fijian athlete, has been selected for Kenya’s final squad for the upcoming Vancouver 7s tournament in Canada. The 36-year-old native of Naitasiri has made significant contributions to Kenya’s rugby scene, particularly with Kabras RFC, where he played a pivotal role in securing the team’s first Kenya Cup victory in 2016 and helped them reclaim the title in the recent 2022/23 and 2023/24 seasons.

Kubu’s illustrious journey in rugby began with his involvement in the 15s code for Kenya, but the Vancouver event will mark his first foray into the 7s format. His achievements also include leading the Sugarmen to their first Enterprise Cup victory in 2019, a title they have successfully defended since then.

Having arrived in Kenya in 2015 as a member of the Samurai team for the annual Safari Sevens, Kubu quickly fell in love with the country and chose to stay beyond his initial plans, in contrast to many of his peers who returned home after a year. His commitment to Kenyan rugby was recognized when he received a call-up to the Kenya Simbas, thanks to a change in eligibility rules by World Rugby.

In Vancouver, Kubu will make his debut alongside fellow newcomer Jackson Siketi as part of a competitive team drawn into Pool A with formidable opponents, including series champions Argentina and Olympic gold medalists France.

The full Kenya squad for the tournament includes Kevin Wekesa, George Ooro (C), William Mwanji, Vincent Onyala, Dennis Abukeuse, Samuel Asati, Nigel Amaitsa, Anthony Amondi, Patrick Odongo, Floyd Wabwire, Brian Tanga, Jone Kubu, and Jackson Siketi.

Kubu’s story is one of passion and perseverance, highlighting the opportunity for athletes to shine on international stages while also showcasing the growing influence of rugby in Kenya. Fans are hopeful that Kubu’s debut will inspire others and bring success to the team in Vancouver.
