The Jobs for Nature initiative has been officially terminated, according to an announcement by Fiji’s Ministry of Finance, Strategic Planning, National Development, and Statistics. This initiative was part of a broader effort under the Fiji Social Protection COVID-19 Response and System Development Project, which focused on tree planting and environmental rehabilitation, projected to empower approximately 10,000 Fijians to earn income while addressing climate challenges.
The program received backing from the World Bank, facilitating funding for projects aimed at creating job opportunities through community-based environmental work. In expressing gratitude to all who contributed to the program, PS Shri Gounder noted the successful completion of three rounds of the Jobs for Nature 2.0 Program, initially set up to bolster community income generation in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The initiative’s closure comes at a pivotal moment as Fiji continues to navigate its environmental responsibilities. The Ministry’s efforts reflect a commitment to fostering community resilience and supporting sustainable nature-based employment opportunities amid ongoing climate challenges.
It’s important to maintain the focus on the positive outcomes generated by the initiative, including the contributions to local employment and environmental efforts. Engaging local communities in these projects has underscored the significance of public involvement in climate action initiatives, paving the way for future programs aimed at enhancing both economic stability and environmental health in Fiji.
