Ten students from the Fiji Technical Vocational Training Centre for Persons with Disability have successfully secured stable employment thanks to the newly launched Job Discovery Programme. The initiative, revealed yesterday at the centre located in Brown Street, Suva, aims to facilitate smooth transitions for students into the workforce, allowing them to gain independence.

Nina Tokavou, the Programme Initiative Lead, highlighted the importance of the programme in addressing several essential factors such as effective communication and orientation for students transitioning into work. These aspects are crucial for fostering an inclusive workplace environment, especially as students with disabilities often face unique challenges in employment settings.

The programme was inspired by Tokavou’s participation in an exchange initiative at Opportunity Village, a US-based organization dedicated to supporting individuals with disabilities. She mentioned the timing of the programme is particularly beneficial given Fiji’s current labor shortages, as many young individuals are seeking employment opportunities abroad.

Several local companies have shown interest in participating. Notably, MacDonalds Fiji and Ronald McDonald House of Charity have expressed intentions to create inclusive job opportunities for those with disabilities. Discussions with Tanoa Plaza and the Grand Pacific Hotel also indicate a broader commitment to employing individuals from diverse backgrounds.

The Job Discovery Programme is structured in three phases. Initially, students will learn essential workplace fundamentals, followed by a three-month probationary period, and culminating in securing full-time employment. Tokavou assured that ongoing support and regular engagement with employers would be prioritized to track the students’ progress and adaptation to their new roles.

This initiative aligns with broader efforts in Fiji to enhance vocational training and industry involvement, aiming to create an equitable job market for all youth, particularly those with disabilities.

The programme not only represents hope for the ten students now employed but signifies a commendable step towards inclusion, empowerment, and the development of a more diverse workforce in Fiji. As various organizations continue to work together for the betterment of individuals with disabilities, there is optimism that future initiatives will further open doors and create meaningful opportunities for all.
