The Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) is currently engaged in the removal and replacement of eroded steel beams at the Lomaloma Jetty in Vanuabalavu, a process that commenced earlier this month. They report that the work is progressing positively, although users of the jetty may encounter some disruptions or restricted access during this period.

These critical improvements are aimed at enhancing vessel operations and providing better access for the surrounding community. Such maintenance actions are essential for ensuring the safety and efficiency of maritime activities, reflecting ongoing efforts to manage and rebuild vital infrastructure across Fiji.

This project follows a broader initiative mentioned during the World Maritime Day 2024 celebrations, where Minister for Public Works, Transport and Meteorological Services, Ro Filipe Tuisawau, highlighted the urgent need for repairs to jetties and ports throughout the country due to visible deterioration. His comments underscored the government’s commitment to passenger safety and comfort, as well as the importance of collaboration with international partners to tackle these infrastructure challenges.

Overall, while the improvements may cause temporary inconveniences, they promise to yield long-term benefits for the local community by bolstering the safety and functionality of maritime transport networks. The FRA’s proactive measures are a step toward a more resilient and efficient infrastructure system that supports everyday travel and economic activity in the region.
